What is a good spring skincare routine?

No matter what the season, your skincare routine has tried and tested steps to follow. Much like your winter regime, your spring skincare routine should still include cleansing, toning, moisturising and applying all-important SPF.  But did you know that the products that you rely on in winter could be problematic for your skin come springtime? As the weather moves from cold to humid, it’s important to shift your skin’s hero products to suit these changes too. Even the most simple skincare routine will need a few alterations to get it ready for spring. Read on to find out our top five tips to achieve enviable skin for the new season.

1. Spring Clean Your Make-up

Make-up bag

Springtime brings with it an ‘out with the old, in with the new’ approach to life, and that shouldn’t be any different when it comes to your spring skincare! Do you know that old products that have gone past their shelf life can contribute to pore blockage, breakouts and dull skin? There’s never been a better time to assess your makeup bag! Look through your skincare and makeup products and throw away anything that’s over 6 months old, including old cleansers, toners and moisturisers. As for your brushes, it’s important that they stay germ-free too. Try and include a simple, weekly brush-wash into your spring skincare regime to keep bacteria build-up at bay. Simply wash your brushes with a regular hand soap and dry them with a hair dryer for quick and easy cleaning. Or if they’re really tired, why not treat yourself to a brand new set?

2. Change up your moisturisers and cleansers

If you’re using an oil-based cleanser and/or moisturiser, it’s time to change things up for your new spring skincare routine. In the winter when the air is drier and much colder, your skin needs oil-based products for extra protection and repair! However, when the weather changes, so do your skin’s needs!  By switching to lighter cleansers and moisturisers, your skin can breathe more easily in the warmer weather. Choose water-based cleansers or those that include hyaluronic acid, like our range from Cerave, to both hydrate and moisturise your skin.

When it comes to moisturiser, Frezyderm’s Moisturising Plus face cream is perfect for keeping the face and neck feeling super-soft. And whilst you’re shopping for your face, don’t forget to pamper the rest of your body too, by browsing our range of body lotions.

3. Don’t be frightened to exfoliate!

Exfoliating during winter strips your skin of essential moisture when it needs it the most. However, in springtime, an increase in the air’s humidity means your skin is much more hydrated, so it’s the perfect time to reintroduce this important step. Exfoliating is an essential addition to your Spring skincare routine, removing dry, dead skin cells and leaving your skin feeling smoother and looking more radiant as a result! Keep things gentle with this exfoliating face wash from Johnson & Johnson, kind to even the most sensitive of skins. At Beauty Base, we’re also loving Ayumi’s Turmeric and Bergamot Face Scrub. It’s both vegan-friendly and packed with natural antioxidants great for reducing skin inflammation and stimulating its repair.

4. SPF is your new best friend!

Sunshine on a woman's skin

SPF is an important part of your year-round skin care routine, but come the spring, it’s more important than ever. Springtime brings longer hours of sunlight which means that your skin is increasingly exposed to the sun’s harmful UV rays related to premature ageing, skin damage and, in the worst-case scenario, skin cancer. The only way to ensure that your skin is fully protected is to use an SPF cream, on its own or underneath your makeup (the SPF in your foundation alone isn’t enough). Lancaster’s Sun Sensitive compact face cream is a great product that works on its own or as a base to your foundation and offers SPF 50 protection. Up the protection in your Springtime skincare game with our full range of sunscreen products, including lighter make-ups such as Frezyderm’s Sensitive Red Skin Tinted CC Cream with SPF 30, a perfect swap to your heavier-based foundation. Go easy on products filled with retinol, too, as they stimulate the skin to produce new cells, which are much more susceptible to burning when exposed to the sun.

5. Hydration is still super important

Hydration is so essential to your skin’s functionality, improving its elasticity, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and helping keep oiliness at bay. A good addition to your springtime skincare routine is a hydrating mist because whilst it’s still important to drink plenty of water, a hydrating mist gives your skin an instant refresh and also helps to refresh your makeup and keep it in place. Try Beauty Base’s favourite Lancaster Sun Sport Water Resistant Face Mist, which will give your skin a boost whenever it needs hydrating.
