Why do we celebrate Mother’s Day?
Festivals celebrating motherhood have taken place for centuries, dating back to ancient Greek and Roman times when goddesses were honoured.
In the United Kingdom and Europe, Mother’s Day emerged from an early Christian festival called ‘Mothering Sunday’. Mothering Sunday took place on the fourth Sunday during Lent. It was viewed as a time when worshippers would return to the main church near their home, known as their ‘mother church, to observe a special service.
Over time, Mother’s Day has become a secular celebration where children and adults gift mums, aunts, grandmas, and motherly figures in their life with cards and flowers.
With motherhood being so diverse, flowers are no longer en vogue as a Mother’s Day gift. It’s important to consider who your mum is, a gift that will represent them the best, and what they like day-to-day. After all, not every mum wants to receive flowers!
Now it’s become fashionable to gift presents that will last much longer than flowers, such as perfumes, skincare products, jewellery, and general gift sets.
Since mums can be so hard to shop for, we thought we’d help you out by narrowing down the types of gifts they’ll love and the different people you may give a gift to this Mother’s Day.
That first Mother’s Day will always be a special day that new mums will never forget. They’ll be celebrating their first months with their baby and achieving all the meaningful milestones in their development.
It can be quite overwhelming for first-time mums to go from being on their own to suddenly having a little one to take care of 24/7. So this Mother’s Day, why not give new mums some time for themselves and gift them with a pamper set?
Think of mum’s favourite perfume that she always has on her dressing table, then start building your pamper hamper from this idea.
Gift sets are always the best way to start building up a gift hamper for new mums. Fragrance gift sets usually contain one iconic scent, along with complementary products you won’t find anywhere else like limited-edition samples, as well as designer shower gels and body lotions.
When you’ve chosen her gift set, spoil mum with skincare essentials for the perfect night in, such as face masks and body butters.
What do you get the mum who has everything? We’ve all been there. Dad got her that designer bag, her work BFFs gave her a bottle of champers, and your sister gave mum that expensive French moisturiser – which you’d also planned on getting her for Mother’s Day!
Don’t worry! We’ve all been there. For mums, a bit of TLC, rest, and relaxation is always priceless.
Luckily for you, we’ve got exactly what you need to create your own bespoke gift set for a mum who is already pretty spoiled!
There’s nothing more luxurious than treating yourself with hair masks. Mum likely doesn’t get a spare minute to herself, and products like hair masks require time to nourish your hair. So pick up a book or DVD that mum will love, and why not combine it with pampering masks for face, hair and body?
Then just to make it obvious that you think mum is one in a million, choose a fragrance that’s a modern classic. We recommend Marc Jacobs’ fragrances as their unique perfume bottles are sure to become collectables one day.
Don’t forget about grandma on Mother’s Day! Grandma (AKA gran-gran or nanny) is the matriarchal backbone of the family. She’s always there to give mum advice and reassurance, as well as helping to take care of the kids when a babysitter is needed.
We recommend picking up a vintage fragrance for grandma from the decade that was her heyday. Scents always have a strong connection to memory, and these retro perfumes will remind her of the days when she was young.
Grans from the swinging sixties will no doubt remember Givenchy’s L’Interdit. While the nanas from the seventies will love a YSL fragrance to bring them back to their flower child days.
