What is rosemary oil?

Rosemary is an evergreen herb that originates from the Mediterranean. This means it can thrive in all seasons, keeping its leaves intact even in harsh weather conditions. Rosemary is part of the Lamiaceae family that also houses mint, lavender and basil.

In its purest form, rosemary oil is an essential oil with a slight yellow colour and a pungent, woody scent. It is believed to have numerous uses in hair, beauty, cooking and also medicinal purposes. Some examples include aromatherapy practices, whereby rosemary oil is said to aid in reducing stress levels and anxiety. Although, there is still research ongoing in this field to confirm its healing properties.

That being said, let’s move on to the star of the show today, the benefits rosemary oil can have on hair health and hair growth.

Rosemary oil and hair health

Before we delve right in, a disclaimer, if you will.

It is important to note that it’s advised to steer clear of applying rosemary oil in its purest form directly to the scalp. This is due to reports of some people who have experienced feelings of discomfort and irritation. Of course, we want to avoid that at all costs!

Now, onto the good stuff.

How do I apply rosemary oil to my hair?

If you’re keen to try rosemary oil but aren’t sure where to start, we’ve outlined some key steps to get you started. To improve hair health and growth specifically, there are various ways that you can incorporate rosemary oil into your hair care routine.

Step 1: Dilution

If your rosemary oil is pure, diluting is the place to start. There are many ways you can do this, depending on your preference. A widely-used process is to take around five drops of rosemary oil and mix it with 10 ml of a carrier oil of your choice.

What is the best carrier oil to mix with rosemary oil?

Some great options are:

  • Argan oil

Established in the haircare world, in its own right, argan oil has been widely cited as rich in Vitamin E, hydrating and having the ability to reduce breakage of the hair and split ends.

  • Jojoba oil

There are many great things about jojoba oil, one being it is fabulous for adding moisture to the hair and body. The oil is used in many hair and beauty products and has antioxidant properties.

  • Coconut oil

Perhaps one of the most well-known oils used in the hair and beauty realm, coconut oil is present in many hair masks, shampoos and conditioners. Combining its moisturising, hair-shining abilities with a few drops of rosemary oil is set to be a match made in heaven.

It is always a good idea to carry out a patch test once you have diluted your rosemary oil to ensure it won’t react to your scalp.

Step 2: Application

Diluted rosemary oil, check. You’re ready to go!

To ensure you coat your hair fully, massaging it into your scalp is a great method of application. Now to do the massaging, you could either use your hands or why not make the experience an excuse for a pamper with the help of a scalp brush.

A scalp brush? We hear you ask, well the great news is, we stock a wonderful product that is perfect for rosemary oil application.

The scalp massaging brush hair & scalp treatment from Brushworks has a curved handle, making it easy to grip and work your hair treatment in. This, combined with its thin bristles, makes for a fantastic, at-home spa time.

How long should I leave rosemary oil in my hair?

Once you’re all scalp-massaged out and your hair covered, it’s time to leave the rosemary oil to do its thing. There are various recommendations on how long you should leave it in your hair before washing it out. These all depend on how you’re using it and what your goal is.

We have taken the advice of the Clean Beauty Coach to bring you some exact numbers, who say:

  • Hair rinse: 1-2 minutes
  • Hair mask: at least 30 minutes
  • Scalp massage oil: at least 30 minutes

Of course, you’re the expert on your own hair and may find alternative timings that suit you more!
