What is veganuary?
Veganuary is the practice of going vegan for January. Usually part of a New Year resolution, Veganuary is a great way for people to test if they would like to give up animal-based food and products permanently, to help reduce their carbon footprint or as a health challenge to cleanse themselves after the indulgences of Christmas.
How did veganuary start
Veganuary was founded by Jane Land and Mattew Glover in January 2014. Concerned with animal welfare, sustainability and the feeling that they were being ignored during their vegan activism and street demonstrations, the couple wanted to do something more productive.
After putting their life savings into veganuary, it is now one of the most successful vegan campaigns worldwide.
The crowdfunded event required people to sign up where they received an online "vegan starter kit" recommending recipes, restaurants and products.
The UK-based non-profit organisation organises the challenge yearly to promote and educate people on living a vegan lifestyle. From 12,800 initial sign-ups, it has grown to 706,965 in 2023.
